We all love to dream…this list is really dominated by what women are looking for in the home.
(Use of Pinterest: ~85% women / 15% men)
The top category on Pinterest is “The Home.” The most popular board name is “For the Home.”
Sorry kittens.
Originally found on, Tech Insider. They asked what the most popular pins were in each room category. Instead of massive marble mansions or wood burning cozy cabins, the most popular pins are family homes that people can dream of and possibly apply to their own.
We’ll now go on Pinterest’s Dream Home Adventure going from room to room, from attic to basement and try to make sense of WHY these are the top pinned pics (this may be more difficult than expected). From a real estate selling perspective, this is important to figure out as this is what drives people (women) to buy their next home. From a real estate buying perspective, this is important to be able to narrow down the search OR help you envision a home that will allow you to realize your dreams with a little TLC and DIY.
(Obviously) We’ll Start in the Kitchen
Pinners are looking for the rustic wood floors, large centered islands, and the subtle paint contrast.
White cabinets contrasting with the dark wood floor, granite slabs, large island bar (again), with decorative pendant lighting. Doing the dishes becomes more tolerable with a wide window view.
Now to the Curb Appeal
Pillars, thick white trim , stone, aluminum & wood shingle combination, arched entry
A Grand (Open) Entry
Columns, rustic wood flooring, open concept, vaulted ceiling/well lit, straight back to deck view
OPEN, vaulted ceilings, pendants, long winding stairs every girl has dreamed of walking down in slow motion…(I guess)
Dedicated Dining Area
Mismatched chairs, rustic table/bench, candles, and accessories.
Simplified, Black Lantern contrast, French Door walk-out, fresh feel — more realistic/achievable.
Entertainment / Hosting Rooms
Modern, elegant, large wraparound couch, subtle lighting
Brick flooring, thick columns, contrast cabinetry, iron lighting, open / high ceiling basement
Cozy theater, easy entertainment value, welcoming to eating and drinking
Bonus Attic Space
Rustic wood beams, LIGHT/OPEN, and of course the swing that every homeowner would brag about
Master Bedroom
Vaulted ceilings, chandelier above bed, window chair to read a good book
Dark accent wall, bench, simple drapery, wall ornaments, lots of pillows –surprising that this is a top pin but is easily achievable
Bathrooms
White cabinet and floor contrast, his and her sinks, clean molding, marble counter
Non-traditional / simplistic, towel hanger, faucet, flooring = easy DIY projects
Closets
Grand walk-in closet, shoes shoes more shoes, high ceiling, chandelier, elegant
More realistic yet still a dream walk-in, tons of room, mirror doors, every inch is filled.
More closet space for smaller homes, using unusable space, simple.
Office
Decorative rug, simple accent desktop, chandelier, wall paint, most importantly not a man’s office!
Garage
This one’s a bit bizarre and doesn’t fit the “achievable” mold most of these others do. Still fun to fantasize.
Simple clean white, vaulted ceiling, curtain (not a man’s garage).
Backyard Hanging / Hosting
Covered back patio, additional entertainment value, drapes for privacy, casual hangout for any price of home.
Grill, fire pit, private, garden, romantic, greenery, stone, decorative fountain.
Stone walk, simple, relaxing, achievable.
And that’s it!
Some of you are probably disappointed there wasn’t a man-cave or grill bar by the pool, maybe when guys start pinning…
The Moral of the Pin Story is:
Open Spaces + Vaulted Ceilings + Neutral Paints + Achievable DIY Projects + Chandeliers + Hosting +Features so amazing you don’t have to brag.
